The Take
For a US investor, ITUB is a leveraged bet on the Brazilian real as much as on the bank. Earnings are in BRL; your return is BRL book & profit translated to USD. FX is the dominant risk — a ±15% move in the real swings the USD value ~±13–18%, more than ROE or credit.
On the fundamentals it's the highest-quality name in the batch: ~20% ROE, steady double-digit earnings growth, and a justified P/B of ~2.27x vs the current 2.12x → fair value ~$8.77 vs $8.17, roughly fair-to-slightly-cheap, paying a 6.55% monthly dividend. Uniquely here, it's not stretched — but you must be willing to own BRL exposure. If you expect the real to weaken, haircut accordingly; if you expect Brazilian rates to fall, the re-rating is the upside.
Risk Profile — Med–High
| Exposure | Severity | Direction / note |
| BRL/USD exchange rate | Med–High | Long real — dominant, ±13–18% |
| Brazil sovereign / rates | Medium | Sets discount rate & FX |
| ROE sustainability | Medium | Currently strong ~20% |
| Credit / NPL cycle | Low–Med | Well-managed historically |
| Commodity (indirect) | Low | BR economy is commodity-linked |
The 'inventory' is a BRL-denominated loan book — currency is the master risk. A US holder earns Brazilian ROE but bears real/USD translation on book value, earnings, and every monthly dividend. Brazilian sovereign rates set both the discount rate and the FX path. Credit/NPL cycle is real but secondary to FX. This is an EM-bank position; size it as one.
