Vista is a pure-play shale oil producer in Argentina's Vaca Muerta. Founded in 2017 by Miguel Galuccio (ex-YPF CEO), listed in Mexico and on the NYSE (ADS = 1 Series A share), and run from Buenos Aires and Neuquén. It drills long horizontal wells in "factory mode" on its core blocks (Bajada del Palo Oeste/Este, Aguila Mora, Coirón Amargo, La Amarga Chica bought from Petronas in 2025, plus the Equinor package that closed in 2026: Bandurria Sur and Bajo del Toro interests).
What it sells, and to whom. Crude is ~87% of volume and (est.) ~95% of revenue. About 72% of crude is exported at export parity (Brent minus a few dollars) through Atlantic/Pacific outlets; the rest goes to Argentine refiners at roughly import parity. Natural gas (~13% of volume, est. ~5% of revenue) goes to domestic industry, distributors and power generators at ~$24/boe-equivalent. One operating segment.
How it makes money. Very low cost: lifting ~$4.5/boe, ~70% EBITDA margins at $85–90 oil, after-tax return on plateau capex ~2x. Every dollar so far has gone back into the ground (production ~40 → ~160 kboe/d since 2021; target 250 kboe/d by 2030). No dividend.
What moves it. (1) Brent: ~$200M EBITDA per $10/bbl. (2) Argentine fiscal take: export duties, provincial royalties 12–18%, RIGI incentive approvals. (3) Sovereign risk and capital controls (cepo), which drive the discount rate and limit cash repatriation. (4) Peso: most revenue is in USD and part of costs is in ARS, so a weaker peso helps margins unless the government responds with price caps. (5) Takeaway: the VMOS export pipeline (due mid-2027).
What changed since 10/14: almost nothing. The stock is up 0.7% ($69.88 → $70.40). Dec-26 Brent is ~$104.5, down ~$0.5 from yesterday (headlines: Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure on Oct 13; the US paused Iran strikes). Vista has issued no new filings or guidance. Q3 is confirmed for Oct 28 after the close (webcast Oct 29; Street EPS ~$2.79, revenue ~$1.14B per Earnings Whispers). Base value moves $59.64 → $59.69 from the Q4 stub price alone. I rebuilt the model and it reproduces yesterday's base to the cent ($59.63). One method detail changed. The scenario deck now holds the 2027 strip and glides linearly to the long-term Brent price by 2030. That moves the bear to $16.22 (was $13.56), the bull to $109.90 (was $108.42) and the probability-weighted value to $66.83 (was $65.84). The verdict does not change. I also corrected the EV per boe of proved reserves (see the risk note). I did not find a 10/15 riesgo país print, so the 10% country risk premium (CRP) stays as it was.
The operations are best-in-basin and that is not the debate. Q2-26: 156 kboe/d (+32% y/y), lifting cost $4.5/boe, 70% EBITDA margin, $805M adj. EBITDA, $491M FCF after the Equinor payment. Proved reserves 588 MMboe at YE-25 (+57%), organic replacement 260%, and a plan to 250 kboe/d by 2030. Vista executes — every target since 2021 has been raised, not cut.
But the stock is a Brent derivative wrapped in Argentina, and Brent is at a war print. Spot ~$104.5 reflects the Hormuz disruption; a year ago it was $64, and the forward curve is steeply backwardated. Our base deck follows the curve down ($104.5 Q4-26 → $88 2027 → $78 2028 → $70 mid-cycle, +2%/yr after 2030), applies a 14.1% WACC (Rf 5.2% + β 1.18 × 4.4% + 0.8 × 10% Argentina CRP), and lets Vista hit its 2030 volume — that's $59.69. The reverse DCF says today's $70.40 needs ~$74/bbl Brent forever (or a flat ~$81 from 2027), or a flat ~12.1% WACC — i.e. Argentina priced like an investment-grade sovereign 12 months before a presidential election with riesgo país back above 600bp.
The swing factor nobody models: capital intensity. Near-term, we take management's own capex ($1.8B in 2026, ~$5.6B through 2028). Long-run we assume ~$23k per new flowing boe/d against a 22% base decline, i.e. ~$1.4B/yr to hold 250 kboe/d. Management's 2030 FCF target (~$1.5B) implies ~$1.0–1.1B — at that intensity the stock is worth ~$88. That's the bull's best argument, and it requires shale efficiency gains that are still a promise. FCF has been negative two years running (2024 −$94M, 2025 −$659M) while EBITDA tripled; growth has eaten every dollar.
Argentina is the risk you aren't paid enough for at this price. Unconventional crude still pays export duty outside RIGI; Neuquén royalties are 12–18%; a 5-point fiscal tightening costs ~$13/share. Capital controls still restrict dividends (Vista pays none — growth plus cepo). The 2027 election is the binary: a Peronist return historically means domestic price caps (2022: "barril criollo") and higher retentions.
Call: No new longs at $70. Holders: trim into $70–72 and collar what you keep. Hormuz has lifted option IV, so a zero-cost collar (sell ~$85 call, buy ~$60 put, Jan-27) locks in most of the war-premium gain. Accumulate below ~$52 (≈ base −13%), or when a Brent reset into the $70s drags the stock down with it. That is where the asset becomes cheap. For non-holders who want to get paid: cash-secured puts at the $55 strike, 60–90 DTE. That gets you long near base value, with the high vol premium as a cushion. If you want a bearish position, use a defined-risk bear call spread above the collar strike (e.g. $85/$90, Jan-27), never a naked short. Next catalyst: Q3 results Oct 28 after the close. Q3 volume should land near 160+ kboe/d. Watch FY capex, the Equinor contingent payment and the VMOS timing.
| HIGH | Brent price — ±$10 LT Brent moves value ±$25/share (~42%). Long: Hormuz/OPEC supply shocks. Short: ceasefire, demand slowdown, backwardation rolling down. |
| HIGH | Argentina sovereign / CRP — riesgo país rose from ~430bp (June) to >600bp (Sept) on 2027-election anxiety. Short: political reversal, BCRA reserve stress. |
| HIGH | Fiscal take & capital controls — export duties, provincial royalties, turnover tax; cepo limits dividends/remittances. Long: RIGI approvals (Bandurria Norte, Águila Mora filings). Short: duty re-imposition, domestic price caps. |
| MED | Leverage & capital intensity — net debt ~$3.1B, 1.41x (1.25x PF); still FCF-negative on a full-year 2025 basis after M&A. Equinor contingent consideration (oil-price-linked) grows with Brent. |
| MED | Midstream takeaway — VMOS export pipeline 65% complete, due mid-2027; Hormuz affected component shipments. Delay = trucking costs/discounts. |
| LOW | Geology/operations — tier-1 acreage, $4.5/boe lifting, 14-yr P1 reserve life. This is the solid line. |
